Thanks for your request for clarification. My meaning was not clear.

I should have worded it along the lines of "poor cleanliness practices make possible the progress of bird flu infections." In other words, bird flu is not likely to progress far in places where good cleanliness habits are practised.

So you are using the word 'spread' in the sense of 'contamination'/'infection' and not in the sense of 'becoming widespread' which was my concern.

Bird flu, whether in humans or other animals, is spread as a result of poor cleanliness practices. That was the objective of the piece, remember? To teach people better health and cleanliness practices. It was not to spread fear about bird flu, which would have no basis, as you said.

You read something out of context. There is nothing wrong with my statement.

However, the scare over bird flu was no doubt propagandized by phramaceutical companies. They care nothing about cleanliness. In fact, they profit from lack of good cleanliness habits.

Can I just question 'the spread of bird flu' statement. I feel there is a propaganda exercise to sell drugs: 'in case the virus crosses over to humans'+'we haven't had a flu pandemic since 1918, we're due for one'. The reality is that there are very few human cases of 'bird flu'.

Thank you for your thoughts, msk.

Teenage rebellion and angst are not characteristic of all cultures, as your comment might suggest. Their problem is that they can't rationalize the cognitive dissonance and double standards they experience with what they were taught as children.

The best approach is always for parents to teach the skills you suggested. Always. But it has not happened with nearly enough families.

Teenagers rebel because they're still exploring the world around them. With a consumer culture and social networking tools to create almost any identity imaginable, kids try on different roles in order to be esteemed by their peers (politicians do it too). Parents are the best weapon for combatting teenage deviance but many of them are just as stressed and busy as their kids. Maybe the best tactic is for parents to teach their children to always question everything and think critically about the actions of themselves and of others. If children can find reasons for the cognitive dissonance and double standards that exist, perhaps there would be less angst (or at least, they would apply their angst proactively).
