As a person with Major Depression Disorder, I can assure you that it is not just one's own emotions that become inert in clinical depression. We also lose the ability to perceive or make judgement calls about other people's emotional states. Just as a person with red/green confusion cannot distinguish red from green, a person who is clinically depressed cannot distinguish between a smile of hapiness vs. an ironic smile, or the avid, forced smile of someone trying to disguise their anger. At the end of the day, platitudes and magical thinking do the mentally ill no good.
